Early Polio Vaccine Trials
This year, two separate teams were at work developing and testing a polio vaccine. Both projects came to disastrous ends.
At New York University, Maurice Brodie, MD (1903-1939), a young researcher, prepared a killed poliovirus vaccine, testing it on chimpanzees, on himself, and finally on children. He enrolled about 11,000 individuals (in both control and vaccine groups) in his trial.
Meanwhile, John Kolmer, MD, of Temple University in Philadelphia developed an attenuated poliovirus vaccine, which he tested in about 10,000 children.
The tests proved a disaster. Several subjects died of polio, and many were paralyzed, made ill, or suffered allergic reactions to the vaccines.

“Vaccine-associated paralytic polio (VAPP)
OPV is made with live attenuated (weakened) polioviruses that can result in a case of vaccine-associated
paralytic polio (VAPP) in approximately 1 in 2.7 million doses of OPV.
VAPP is caused by a strain of poliovirus that has genetically changed in the intestine from the original
attenuated vaccine strain contained in OPV.
It is associated with a single dose of OPV administered in a child or can occur in a close unvaccinated or
non-immune contact of the vaccine recipient who is excreting the mutated virus.
The risk of VAPP varies by dose and by setting.
The risk of VAPP from subsequent doses of vaccine is even lower than from the first dose in
industrialized countries. This is because in these settings the first dose of OPV stimulates immunity
against polioviruses (whether wild poliovirus or the weakened poliovirus contained in OPV). In
developing countries, the risk of VAPP is higher from subsequent doses than following the first dose.
There are no outbreaks associated with VAPP.
The very small risk of VAPP is to the individual susceptible vaccine recipient or close contact. The
weakened virus may paralyze the child or his or her contact, but does not spread to cause other cases
of paralysis.
Vaccine derived poliovirus (VDPV)
A VDPV is a very rare strain of poliovirus, genetically changed from the original strain contained in OPV.
On very rare occasions, under certain conditions, a strain of poliovirus in OPV may change and revert to
a form that may be able to cause paralysis (VDPV) in humans and develop the capacity for sustained
circulation. The latter is known as a circulating VPDV (cVDPV).
Circulating vaccine derived poliovirus (cVDPV)
A cVDPV is associated with sustained person-to-person transmission and is circulating in the environment.
“Persistent cVDPVs” refer to cVDPVs known to have circulated for more than six months”
In the US between 1916 and 1955, there were four separate polio outbreaks caused by experimental polio vaccines and lab contamination of workers. Tonsillectomies ensured children would contract the worst form of polio, and was a routine operation on children. Early treatments for temporary paralysis were immobilizing the limbs, now known to be the worst thing to do and guaranteed the patients would become permanent paralyzed.

“Health officials announced a polio epidemic centered in Brooklyn, New York.Total infected in New York was around 9,000, 2,400 died, and 80 percent of the deaths were children under five. Across the United States in 1916, polio took the lives of about 6,000 people, leaving thousands more paralyzed. 27,000 cases of polio had been reported in 26 states between June and December of 1916. From that summer on, there was not a single year that passed without an epidemic of poliomyelitis.
The 1916 epidemic was believed by many, to have been caused by a “mixed virus” (MV strain) of polio that had escaped from the Rockefeller Institute, which was then located just three miles from the epicenter of the outbreak at 63rd Street and York Avenue in Manhattan. It was here that Dr. Simon Flexner, the first director of the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research, was conducting studies by transferring spinal cord tissue containing the poliovirus from one Rhesus monkey’s spinal cord to another”

The Cutter Incident
In 1955, a Berkeley, California pharmaceutical company, The Cutter Laboratories, prepared several batches of recently approved Jonas Salk polio vaccine and inadvertently mixed live poliovirus with its vaccine doses. The result was a national tragedy. Paul Offit, MD, in The Cutter Incident reports that 220,000 people were infected with the live polio virus from Cutter, 70,000 developed muscle weakness, 164 were severely paralyzed and 10 were killed. 75% were paralyzed for the rest of their lives.“
A common rabies vaccine for humans is being recalled in the United States and 23 other countries after a live strain of the virus was found in some other samples made at the same time.Testing of Aventis Pasteur’s IMOVAX vaccine uncovered the presence of a live Pittman-Moore strain of the rabies virus, when the drug "should not contain live virus,” the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said.“

Alert: A meningitis C vaccine has been withdrawn because it was contaminated with a potentially lethal bacterium
Thousands of doses of meningitis C vaccine were recalled after a contamination scare. The alert was sounded after tests found traces of the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus, which can cause blood poisoning. About 60,000 doses are being recalled, a third of which had already been delivered to GP surgeries and health clinics in the past month. It is not yet known how many have been given to babies. “
