Medicine’s big new battleground: does mental illness really exist?

Critics claim that the American Psychiatric Association’s increasingly voluminous manual will see millions of people unnecessarily categorised as having psychiatric disorders. For example, shyness in children, temper tantrums and depression following the death of a loved one could become medical problems, treatable with drugs. So could internet addiction.

Inevitably such claims have given ammunition to psychiatry’s critics, who believe that many of the conditions are simply inventions dreamed up for the benefit of pharmaceutical giants.

A disturbing picture emerges of mutual vested interests, of a psychiatric industry in cahoots with big pharma. As the writer, Jon Ronson, only half-joked in a recent TED talk: “Is it possible that the psychiatric profession has a strong desire to label things that are essential human behaviour as a disorder?”

I rent pasture and stables for my larger animals on a farm nearby. Ten cows with calfs, a bull, twentyfour sheeps and two horses. Today I have only hereford cows but planning to get some native breeds of cows like fjällko (swedish montain cow) and rödkulla (red hornless cow) as well. My aim is to breed organic meat and fleeces and wool in a sustainble way for myself and my family and sell to people that just like me, do’nt want to support the massproducing meatindustry any more.

The pasture is very good. Damp meadows along the lake and hills with bits of forest. All land that wont grow crops anyway. Perfect for grazing. The fencing is very old though. At least ten kilometers of barbed wire from the forties, or something like that, that will have to be replaced.
The barns are not very practical. Beautiful but not suitable. Will have to rethink how to manage next winter.

This week I have been basking in the sunshine of dandelions. Like my son’s noses, the bare earth has suddenly come out in freckles. Unbelievable that those weightless seeds blown last summer have done more than survive this winter, they seem to have thrived. Content to take root wherever the wind blows them they are beaming from every untended piece of ground. Adding their shaggy brilliance to the world, putting a smile on my face wherever I go.

incredibly good year for dandelions. at first i though it was just this estate as there’d been none for years but then i noticed them everywhere in huge amounts. it’s like the invasion of the dandelions. i hope people won’t get the round up out though.

The Whale… If you read a recent front page story of the San Francisco Chronicle, you would have read about a female humpback whale who had become entangled in a spider web of crab traps and lines. She was weighted down by hundreds of pounds of traps that caused her to struggle to stay afloat. She also had hundreds of yards of line rope wrapped around her body, her tail, her torso, a line tugging in her mouth. A fisherman spotted her just east of the Farallon Islands (outside the Golden Gate) and radioed an environmental group for help. Within a few hours, the rescue team arrived and determined that she was so bad off, the only way to save her was to dive in and untangle her. They worked for hours with curved knives and eventually freed her. When she was free, the divers say she swam in what seemed like joyous circles. She then came back to each and every diver, one at a time, and nudged them, pushed them gently around as she was thanking them. Some said it was the most incredibly beautiful experience of their lives. The guy who cut the rope out of her mouth said her eyes were following him the whole time, and he will never be the same.
